This dude was happily taking pictures of girls legs, feet and whatever else he pleased without their consent. So I snapped my own pic and said “enjoy the internet motherfucker’. He laughed at me. Plz share. #publicshame #newYork #subway

Words Are the Most Powerful Weapon in the World

atopfourthwall:

So, naturally there’s been plenty of talk and debate over the “Please Let the Ads Play” video. Some are calling it a big controversy or something really heated and causing problems, many telling me to not let the haters get me down.  I really do appreciate it, but really they’re not. People have posted good arguments about why they use Adblockers, people have posted bad ones, and lots of people have whitelisted or switched off adblockers from the requested because they didn’t realize how I got my revenue.

However, something just happened on my blog unrelated to ad stuff itself. A poster in the comments encouraged me to not let this stuff get me down and that he’s sorry people are cyber bullying me. Now, while I don’t consider anything I’ve had to be cyber bullying, I thanked them for the support, regardless. However, then some idiot posted this anonymously (and I do love how so many people have tried to troll the post anonymously - nothing shows you’re a bigger man than not wanting to even have a handle or username):

Man up, would you? People are going to call you not nice thing online and offline no matter where you go. Do you remember this phrase back at kindergarten? “Sticks and stones may break your bones but words will never hurt you.” Trolling and hatred, whatever those two mean anymore since they are constantly misapplied to ‘that thing people do that I don’t like and/or find amusing’, are not as bad as anyone makes them out to be. You are no longer in grade school - act like it.

This kind of thinking, as a writer especially, gets me pissed off. As such, I am reposting the response I made to Mr. Anonymous:

Aaaaand here’s where I step in and call complete and utter bull.

That phrase? “Words will never hurt me?” It’s utter and complete garbage, encouraged to children in an attempt to frighten off bullying, but is a complete LIE.

Words will ALWAYS hurt people because words are the most powerful weapon in the world. Words are communication. Words are understanding. Words are language and art and thought. Words have the power to inspire, crush, bring hope, or cause terror. The use of the right words at the right time can forever be sewn into the tapestry of history and the wrong ones can bring death to the innocent.

You want to see him act like he’s no longer in grade school? Fine - you can start by understanding the significance of words and the way words can be used to hurt others, because only a grade schooler thinks that they don’t matter.
