You can’t “relate” to us, white people.

cruelestyouth:

A lot of you desperately try to.  You hear stories by us, and you experienced something that’s similar, so you go and talk about yourself.

Totally erasing the differences between us.  It’s a HUGE derail.

You’re showing that you don’t want to embrace our differences from you.  You want to ignore that they’re there and make your experiences as a white person seem more important than ours.

That’s exactly what you’re doing when you try to pull this shit.  You feel uncomfortable if we talk about ourselves, so you try to whitewash everything with your white experiences.

So, you hate having your hair touched?  It annoys you?  Well, cool story.

But when black people are talking about white people constantly touching our hair, it’s NOT the same, no matter how much you try to make it so.

I’m not saying no connections can be made, but you’re not even trying to make connections — you’re just outright erasing us when you do this and putting yourself on center stage.

So before you relate, just fucking hold your (whiteness-influenced) impulses to talk and think before you open your mouth.  Is it REALLY the same, or are you just trying to delete us while holding your experiences as the default?
